How to Wash and Maintain Blackout Curtains Safely

Al Falah Collection

Blackout curtains are incredible for keeping your room dark and cool, but they require delicate handling. The thick backing that blocks the light is easily damaged in washing machines if you aren't careful.

Spot Cleaning First

Before tossing them in the machine, try spot cleaning. Use a damp microfiber cloth with a tiny drop of dish soap to gently dab away stains on the fabric side.

Machine Washing

If they need a full wash, follow these strict rules:

  • Cold Water Only: Heat will melt the blackout backing causing it to stick together and peel off.
  • Gentle Cycle: Use the most delicate cycle available.
  • Wash 1-2 Panels at a Time: Don't cram the machine, as the backing needs space to move freely.

Drying Blackout Curtains

NEVER PUT BLACKOUT CURTAINS IN THE DRYER.

The absolute best way to dry them is to hang them right back up on the curtain rod while they are still damp. Keep the windows open to allow air flow. Hanging them while damp also helps the wrinkles fall out naturally due to gravity!
