How to Wash and Maintain Blackout Curtains Safely

Blackout curtains are incredible for keeping your room dark and cool, but they require delicate handling. The thick backing that blocks the light is easily damaged in washing machines if you aren't careful.

Spot Cleaning First

Before tossing them in the machine, try spot cleaning. Use a damp microfiber cloth with a tiny drop of dish soap to gently dab away stains on the fabric side.

Machine Washing

Machine wash only if the complete curtain’s care label permits it. If the label prohibits washing or is missing, ask the maker or a professional cleaner. For a permitted wash:

• Temperature: Use the setting on the care label; backings and woven blackout fabrics have different requirements.
• Gentle Cycle: Use the most delicate cycle available.
• Wash 1-2 Panels at a Time: Don't cram the machine, as the backing needs space to move freely.

Drying Blackout Curtains

Follow the curtain’s specified drying method.

Rehang while damp only if the care instructions allow it and the hardware supports the wet weight. Otherwise use the specified drying method. Keep wet fabric away from surfaces it may mark, and allow it to dry fully with ventilation.
