The Ultimate Guide to Measuring Your Windows for the Perfect Curtain Fit

A good curtain fit starts with your rod or track and the way you want the fabric to hang. Before ordering, take a tape measure, write down your measurements, and check the sizing instructions for your chosen curtain.

1. Decide Where the Curtains Will Hang

Measure the window and surrounding wall before choosing hardware. Leave space at the sides for the curtains to gather when open, and check for furniture, handles, and other obstructions. If your rod or track is already installed, use its usable width as your starting measurement; exclude decorative rod finials.

2. Allow Width for Folds

Flat fabric needs extra width to form folds when closed. For panels sold by their flat width, a starting point is 1.5 times the rod or track width for light fullness, or 2 times for fuller folds. Follow the product-specific recommendation for the heading and fabric. Do not apply this multiplier again to curtains sold by their finished, pleated coverage width.

3. Measure the Finished Length

Choose a sill-length finish or a floor-length finish that clears the floor. Measure vertically at the left, centre, and right, because floors and fittings may be uneven. For floor clearance, use the shortest measurement and subtract your intended gap.

Check where the listed curtain length starts. Eyelet curtains can include fabric above the rod; hook and track headings use a different suspension point. Match your measurement to the seller’s diagram instead of assuming every heading is measured from the same place.

Your Before-Ordering Checklist

• Record rod or track width, heading style, and finished drop.
• Use one unit throughout: 1 inch equals 2.54 cm.
• Confirm whether dimensions describe one panel or a pair, and flat width or finished coverage.
• Check panel quantity, lining, care instructions, and any stated shrinkage allowance.
• For blackout curtains, consider gaps at the top and sides as well as fabric coverage.

Check More Than the Curtain Size

Confirm panel quantity, heading type, fibre composition, lining, and finished dimensions. Ask for a close-up of hems and the reverse side. A dark colour does not prove blackout performance, and a “thermal” label should explain the construction or evidence behind the claim.
