How to Fix Small Holes in Fabric: A Quick DIY Repair Guide

Sometimes, a sharp object, a pet's claw, or a zipper might catch on your beautiful fabrics, resulting in a small tear or hole. Before you decide to replace the item entirely, try this simple DIY repair method.

What You Need

• A fine sewing needle
• Thread that matches the color of your fabric as closely as possible
• Small scissors

The Repair Process

Step 1: Trim away any loose, frayed threads around the hole. You want a clean area to work with.

Step 2: Thread your needle and tie a small knot at the end.

Step 3: Turn the fabric inside out (if possible) so you are working on the back/hidden side.

Step 4: Gently pinch the two sides of the tear together. Use a basic "whip stitch" or straight stitch to sew the edges together tightly. Make sure the stitches are close together to prevent the hole from expanding.

Step 5: Tie off the thread securely and trim the excess.

What NOT to Do

• Do NOT use fabric glue or super glue: It will dry hard, scratchy, and will eventually wash out or ruin the surrounding fabric fibers.
