The Secret to Keeping Cotton Bedsheets Soft & Crisp

The Secret to Keeping Cotton Bedsheets Soft & Crisp

•Al Falah Collection

Cotton is a magical fiber that actually has the potential to get softer and more comfortable the more you wash it—if you wash it correctly. If you've ever had sheets that became rough, pilled, or lost their color, this guide is for you.

Washing Rules

  • Wash Weekly: Wash your sheets every 7 to 10 days to remove body oils that degrade cotton fibers.
  • Warm Water, Not Hot: Hot water shrinks cotton and breaks down the threads. Warm or cool water is perfect.
  • Don't Overload the Machine: Sheets need room to agitate in the water to get clean. If you cram them in, they will wrinkle severely and won't wash properly.

The Drying Trick

Over-drying is the #1 reason cotton sheets become stiff. If you use a dryer, take the sheets out while they are still slightly damp. Smooth them out with your hands and put them directly on the bed, or let them air dry the rest of the way. This prevents deep wrinkles and keeps the fibers soft.

What to Avoid

Never use bleach on cotton sheets—even white ones! Bleach causes the cotton fibers to become brittle and yellow over time. Instead, use a half-cup of baking soda in the wash cycle to brighten them naturally.
