How to Get Wrinkles Out of Curtains Without Taking Them Down

Your visual guide

Start gently; check before steaming

1. Let folds settle

Hang freely and smooth gently with dry hands. Do not add weights.

2. Check both layers

Read care instructions for the face fabric and lining. If unclear, ask before heating.

3. Test, then proceed

Test a hidden area if steam is permitted. Stop if the colour or surface changes.

Only steam when both the curtain’s care guidance and your appliance instructions allow it. Never place a hand behind the steam path.

Packing creases can spoil the look of newly hung curtains. Some relax while hanging; others need treatment. The safe method depends on both the face fabric and any lining or coating, so read the curtain label before adding moisture or heat.

1. Start Without Heat

Spread the panels across the rod and gently arrange the folds with clean, dry hands. Let the fabric hang freely for a day or two, checking that the hem is not caught behind furniture. Do not pull hard on seams or add weights to the hem.

2. Match the Method to the Material

  • Uncoated cotton or blends: Use steam only when the care instructions permit it. Test a hidden area and let it dry before treating a visible section.
  • Sheers and delicate fabrics: Do not assume a lightweight fabric tolerates steam. Check for distortion or water marks during the hidden-area test.
  • Blackout, thermal, or lined curtains: The backing may have different care requirements. If steaming is not explicitly supported, ask the manufacturer; do not steam a coating on the strength of the face-fabric label alone.
  • Dry-clean-only or unidentified material: Ask a professional cleaner about crease removal.

3. If Steam Is Permitted

Use a steamer approved for hanging fabrics and follow its manual for water, settings, distance, and contact. Protect nearby surfaces and keep the appliance upright as instructed. Work in small sections with moving passes; avoid soaking the fabric. Never put a hand behind the fabric in the steam path, and keep children and pets away. Let the curtains dry fully with ventilation.

Check your steamer’s own manual as well as the curtain care label. Settings and permitted fabrics vary by appliance, so do not use one temperature or technique for every curtain.

When Hanging Treatment Is Not Enough

Stop if you notice colour transfer, puckering, a changed sheen, or damage to the lining. Deep creases may need label-approved pressing after removal or professional care. Avoid improvised vinegar sprays and steaming near sockets.
